Can Snoring Damage Your Throat?
Chronic vibration and overnight drying do measurably affect the tissue, and there is a feedback loop where the damage makes the snoring worse.
Yes, to a degree, and the more interesting part is that the damage feeds back into the snoring.
What is happening to the tissue
Snoring is soft tissue vibrating, often for hours, most nights, for years. Two things follow.
Mechanical trauma from vibration. Repeated high-frequency vibration of the soft palate and uvula produces measurable changes in that tissue — inflammation, and over time changes to the muscle and nerve supply within the palate. Research on habitual snorers has found evidence of local nerve damage in the palate compared with non-snorers.
Drying. Snoring almost always involves some mouth breathing, and air passing across the oropharynx all night evaporates the protective mucus layer. Dry mucosa is more fragile, more easily irritated, and stickier — which makes it vibrate more readily.
The feedback loop
This is the part worth understanding.
Vibration inflames and swells the palatal tissue. Swollen tissue narrows the airway slightly further. A narrower airway vibrates more. Local nerve damage may reduce the tissue's own responsiveness in maintaining tone.
So heavy snoring can, over years, make the anatomy that produces it somewhat worse. It is one of several reasons snoring tends to worsen with age rather than stay constant. Why.
The morning sore throat
The most common symptom, and it is usually the drying rather than the vibration.
Waking with a scratchy, raw throat and a dry mouth is the signature of overnight mouth breathing. It typically eases within an hour or two of getting up as saliva production resumes.

What about your voice?
Chronic snorers sometimes report morning hoarseness. That is usually the same drying effect on the larynx rather than damage to the vocal cords themselves, and it settles through the day.
Persistent hoarseness is different. Hoarseness lasting more than about three weeks warrants a doctor regardless of whether you snore — it is a symptom with a differential that needs looking at rather than attributing to snoring.

What reduces the damage
Stop the vibration, which means treating the snoring rather than the throat. Working out where your airway narrows is the first step. The decision tree.

Humidify the bedroom, particularly in winter.

When to see a doctor
Persistent sore throat that does not resolve through the day, hoarseness lasting more than three weeks, pain on swallowing, a lump sensation that persists, or any bleeding.
