Saliva is doing more than you think
Saliva is not just moisture. It is a continuously produced antibacterial system that washes away food debris and dead cells, buffers acid, and contains enzymes and antimicrobial proteins that suppress bacterial growth.
Bad breath is overwhelmingly produced by anaerobic bacteria on the back of the tongue and around the gums, breaking down proteins and releasing volatile sulphur compounds — the sulphurous smell people describe.
Saliva keeps that in check. Remove the saliva and the bacteria have eight uninterrupted hours.
What mouth breathing does
Saliva production naturally falls overnight — that is normal physiology, and it is why everyone has some degree of morning breath.
Mouth breathing makes it much worse by adding evaporation. Several thousand litres of air pass across the oral mucosa over a night, and each pass removes moisture. The nose normally humidifies incoming air to around 95% relative humidity before it reaches anything delicate; bypass the nose and that conditioning does not happen.
So you get reduced production plus active drying. The mouth becomes an ideal environment for anaerobic bacteria, and morning breath goes from mild to notable.
The tell: if you wake with a dry mouth and bad breath, and both improve within an hour of getting up as saliva returns, that is the mouth-breathing pattern rather than a dental problem.
Why mints and mouthwash do not fix it
They mask the smell for a while and, in the case of alcohol-based mouthwash, dry your mouth further — which makes the underlying situation worse.
Treating the cause means restoring nasal breathing overnight.
What actually fixes it
Work out why your mouth is opening. Breathe through your nose only, mouth closed, for three minutes sitting up and then lying flat. The timed test.
If your nose is the problem, treat that. Congestion, allergic rhinitis or valve narrowing all force the mouth open. If the cheek-pull test eases your breathing, a nasal strip addresses valve narrowing and sometimes closes the mouth on its own. Why.
If your nose is clear and the mouth still opens, that is the situation mouth tape is genuinely for. Dry mouth typically improves within three or four nights, and the breath improves with it. Read the screening first — who should not use it.
Humidify the bedroom. Dry indoor air, particularly with winter heating, compounds the drying regardless of how you are breathing.
Clean your tongue. The back of the tongue is where most of the bacteria live, and a tongue scraper does more for morning breath than brushing alone.
Hydrate, though ambient humidity matters more than water intake here.
When it is not mouth breathing
Persistent bad breath that does not resolve through the day is a different problem and worth a dentist.
Gum disease is the most common cause and it is treatable. Tonsil stones produce a characteristic smell and are easily missed. Medication-induced dry mouth — hundreds of common drugs reduce saliva — is under-recognised. And reflux, sinus infection and some systemic conditions can all contribute.
