What Is Actually in Your Mouth Tape? A Buyer's Guide to Adhesives, PFAS and Lab Testing
You are adhering this to your face for eight hours a night, for years. Here is what the materials are, what the testing standards mean, and the four questions a manufacturer should be able to answer.
Consider the exposure. A strip of adhesive across the lips, in contact with skin and the vermilion border, for seven or eight hours, every night, for as long as you keep the habit. That is a meaningful cumulative contact with a material most people never think about.
The category is largely unregulated in the way that matters. Mouth tape is generally sold as a cosmetic or general wellness product rather than a medical device, which means nobody is obliged to test it, publish anything, or tell you what the adhesive is. Most brands publish nothing.
This is the guide to reading what little is published, and knowing what to ask for when there is nothing.
The two components
The backing is the visible fabric. Options in the category run from plastic film through non-woven synthetics to bamboo-derived viscose, often marketed as bamboo silk. Backing decides breathability and flex. A plastic film traps moisture against the skin, which is a common reason for both maceration and edge-lift after a few hours. A woven or bamboo-based backing moves with the face.
The adhesive is where the real differences live, and where the safety question sits. Two broad families:
- Acrylate adhesives. Cheap, strong, and the more common irritant. Most low-cost tape is acrylate.
- Silicone adhesives. Gentler on skin, more expensive, easier to remove without stripping the stratum corneum.
If a product does not tell you which family its adhesive belongs to, that is information in itself.
What the testing standards actually mean
Two things get cited in this category. They test different questions and they are not interchangeable.
ISO 10993 — biocompatibility
This is the medical-device standard for whether a material is safe in contact with the body. The parts that matter for something adhered to skin:
- 10993-5, cytotoxicity. Does an extract of the material kill cells in culture? Results are expressed as cell viability against a 70% pass threshold.
- 10993-10, sensitisation. Does it provoke an allergic response on repeat exposure?
- 10993-10, irritation. Does it inflame skin on contact? Scored out of 8, where 0 is negligible.
These are real tests with real thresholds. A brand citing a specific part number and a specific score is telling you something verifiable. A brand saying "dermatologist approved" is not.
PFAS screening
PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are the persistent fluorinated compounds now under regulatory pressure across consumer goods. They turn up in adhesives, coatings, and water-repellent treatments, and they are the reason "what is the backing treated with" is a fair question.
A credible PFAS claim names the compound count tested, the analytical method (typically LC-MS/MS and GC-MS), and the standard, such as the EN 17681 series. "PFAS-free" with nothing behind it is a marketing line.
The trap: whose test is it, and what was tested?
This is the part most buyers miss, and it is where you should be most sceptical — including of brands we recommend.
Testing an adhesive is not the same as testing the finished tape. An adhesive manufacturer will often have run ISO 10993 on its raw adhesive, and a tape brand can then cite that data. That is legitimate and it is meaningful, but it describes the adhesive as supplied, not the assembled product with its backing, its coating and its converting process.
Who commissioned it matters too. Data commissioned by the adhesive's manufacturer is not the same as data the tape brand paid for independently.
Titan Recovery is the clearest published example of both points, and to its credit the distinction is visible on its own lab-tested page. Its ISO 10993 results — cytotoxicity averaging 95% cell viability against the 70% line, zero sensitisation reactions, and an irritation score of 0.0 out of 8 — are tests on the adhesive, and were commissioned by the adhesive's manufacturer. Its PFAS screen, 501 compounds by LC-MS/MS and GC-MS per EN 17681, is on the finished tape. Both are more than the category norm. Neither is "the whole tape passed ISO 10993", and you should not read it as such — nor should any brand imply it.
That is the standard of precision to hold everyone to.
The four questions
Ask these of any tape you are considering. The answers are usually on the product page or nowhere.
- What is the adhesive? Silicone or acrylate. A brand that will not say is telling you it is acrylate.
- What is the backing, and is it coated with anything? Coatings are where fluorinated treatments hide.
- What has been tested, and by whom? Adhesive or finished product. Brand-commissioned or supplier-commissioned. Name the standard and the number.
- Can I see the report? Not a badge. The document.
A brand that answers all four is not necessarily better than one that does not — but it is the only one giving you the means to check.
What this looks like across the category
Very few products clear question three or four. Of the ones this site covers, Titan publishes the most and is explicit about the adhesive-versus-finished-product distinction. Sleep Karma cites ISO 10993-1:2018 adhesive compliance. Most of the rest publish a claim and no document.
That is not a reason to assume the unpublished products are unsafe. It is a reason to notice that you cannot tell, on a product you will wear on your face for a thousand nights.
