Nasal Strips and a Dry Nose

A strip does nothing for dryness and can make it slightly worse by moving more air. The fix is humidity, and it makes the strip work better too.

A common winter complaint with a straightforward answer that is not a nasal strip.

Why a strip does not help

Dryness in the nose comes from insufficient moisture in the air passing over the mucosa, and from the mucosa itself producing less.

A strip changes the size of the airway, not the humidity of the air moving through it. If anything, a wider valve means slightly more airflow, and more airflow over dry mucosa dries it a little faster.

That is not a reason to stop using one — the effect is small and the dilation benefit usually outweighs it. It just means the strip is not the tool for this problem.

Why your nose is dry

Indoor heating. The big one. Warming cold outside air without adding moisture can drop indoor relative humidity dramatically, well below the 40 to 50% range that feels comfortable.

Mouth breathing. Ironically, this dries the mouth and throat rather than the nose, but the two often occur together. Mouth dryness.

Medication. Antihistamines are the common culprit, along with some decongestants and diuretics.

Overused decongestant sprays. These dry the mucosa as well as causing rebound congestion. Why.

Altitude and air travel. Very low humidity in both.

CPAP without adequate humidification, which is a frequent and highly fixable cause. The fix.

What actually fixes it

A humidifier in the bedroom. The single most effective thing. Aim for 40 to 50% relative humidity — a cheap hygrometer tells you where you are. Clean it regularly, because a dirty humidifier is worse than no humidifier.

Saline spray or gel. Directly moisturises the nasal lining. Safe indefinitely, cheap, and works within minutes. A saline gel at bedtime is particularly good for overnight dryness.

Drink water, though this matters less than people assume compared with ambient humidity.

Lower the bedroom temperature slightly. Warmer air holds more moisture, so a hot room with a fixed amount of water in it feels drier.

Review medication with a pharmacist if dryness started after a prescription change.

When dryness causes nosebleeds

Dry nasal mucosa cracks, and the front of the septum has a rich blood supply close to the surface, which is why most nosebleeds start there.

If you are getting recurrent nosebleeds, humidify and use saline gel, and be gentle with the adhesive — remove strips wet and shift the position, since repeated adhesive over an already-fragile area is not helping. Removal technique.

Recurrent or heavy nosebleeds, or nosebleeds on blood thinners, warrant a doctor rather than a humidifier.

Dryness and congestion together

A confusing combination that is common in winter: the nose feels blocked and dry.

Dry mucosa becomes irritated and swells, which produces congestion. So the dryness is causing the blockage, and treating the dryness treats both. People frequently reach for a decongestant here, which dries things further and makes it worse.

Humidify first, then reassess. If congestion persists on a properly humidified nose, look at the usual causes. The congestion routes.
