How to Read a Sleep Supplement Label

Five checks that separate a formula worth taking from a shelf-filler, and the one word on a panel that tells you the product is hiding its dosing.

The supplement industry is regulated far more lightly than most people assume. Products do not need to demonstrate efficacy before sale, and enforcement on label accuracy is largely reactive. Independent testing has repeatedly found products containing less of an active than claimed, more of something else, or occasionally neither.

That means the label is doing a lot of work, and knowing how to read one is most of the skill. Five checks, in order of how much they tell you.

1. Is there a proprietary blend?

This is the single biggest tell.

A "proprietary blend" lists several ingredients and one total weight. You are told the blend is 2.4g and that it contains ten things. You are not told how much of each — and the ordering convention means the first ingredient could be 2.3g of the cheapest one and the last could be a dusting.

The stated reason is protecting a formula from copying. The practical effect is that you cannot tell whether the ingredient you are buying it for is at a research dose or present in a trace amount for label decoration.

A product that discloses individual doses is telling you it is not hiding anything. That is worth more than any other claim on the box.

Note that a blend is not automatically damning — a formula can disclose its named actives individually and carry a supporting blend. AGZ does exactly that: magnesium, L-theanine, glycine, myo-inositol, ashwagandha and saffron all broken out with individual amounts, plus a 2.4g calming herb blend behind them. The things that matter are disclosed; the supporting cast is not. That is a reasonable structure. A product where everything is inside the blend is not.

2. Are the doses in the research range?

Ingredients get into formulas because trials exist. The trials used specific amounts, and a product at a tenth of the trial dose is borrowing the credibility without delivering the intervention.

The figures worth memorising:

That last one runs the opposite way to the others. Most melatonin products are five to thirty times the researched dose, which is not a bonus — high doses are associated with more next-day grogginess without proportionally better sleep. Why.

3. Is the extract standardised, and to what?

For botanicals, the milligram figure is meaningless without the standardisation.

Ashwagandha is standardised to withanolides, typically 2.5–5%. An extract at 5% delivers roughly twice the actives of one at 2.5% at the same weight. Saffron is standardised to crocins, typically around 3%. Green tea to EGCG, valerian to valerenic acid, and so on.

"300mg ashwagandha" is not a claim. "300mg ashwagandha extract, 5% withanolides" is.

Also check whether the number refers to the compound or the element. A magnesium label may state 2,000mg of magnesium L-threonate while delivering 250mg of elemental magnesium — both figures are honest, and only the second one is the dose.

4. Who tested it, and for what?

Third-party testing is the only meaningful check on whether the contents match the label.

NSF Certified for Sport® is the strictest of the mainstream marks. It verifies label accuracy, screens for over 280 banned substances, and audits the manufacturing facility. Originally aimed at athletes subject to drug testing, it is useful to everyone as the highest bar routinely available.

USP Verified and Informed Sport are comparable in rigour.

"Third-party tested" with no named certifier is weaker but not worthless — a named lab and a date, as with a Light Labs test covering a specified number of substances, is more informative than the phrase alone.

"GMP facility" refers to manufacturing practice, not to the product. It is close to a baseline expectation rather than a distinction.

5. What is the returns window?

Several of these actives — ashwagandha, saffron, magnesium — build over four to twelve weeks. A 30-day window is not long enough to evaluate them, and a product that is non-returnable puts the whole risk on you.

90 days is generous and lets you run a proper trial. Seed PM-02 is non-returnable for food safety reasons, which is common for supplements sold through Amazon and worth knowing before you order rather than after.

The check that comes before all five

Does the product claim to treat something?

Supplements are not permitted to claim they treat, cure or prevent a disease, and one that does is either operating outside the rules or relying on you not noticing the asterisk. On this site the relevant version is snoring and sleep apnea: no supplement treats either, and anything implying otherwise has failed the first test before you get to the panel. Why, mechanically.

Common questions

What is a proprietary blend and why does it matter?
A list of ingredients with a single total weight and no individual amounts. It prevents you knowing whether the active you are buying it for is at a research dose or a trace amount, which is usually the point.

Less than a named certification. A stated lab, date and number of substances tested is informative; the bare phrase with no detail is close to marketing.
