The Best Sound Machines for Sleeping Through Snoring

Most sound machines are optimised for babies and traffic noise. Blocking a snore beside you needs low-frequency output and genuinely continuous sound, which narrows the field considerably.

Sound machines are sold mainly to parents of small children and to people living on busy roads. Masking a snore from eighteen inches away is a harder problem than either, and the features that matter are not the ones on the front of the box.

Four things decide whether a machine works for this.

What actually matters

Low-frequency output. Snoring sits between roughly 100 and 500 Hz. A machine that cannot produce meaningful energy down there will not mask it, however loud it goes. Small units with tiny drivers are physically incapable of this — you cannot get deep sound out of a two-inch speaker. Size is a genuine proxy for capability here, which is the opposite of what the travel-friendly marketing suggests. Why the frequency match matters.

Genuinely continuous sound. Cheap digital machines play a short recording on a loop. Loops are typically 30 seconds to a few minutes, and once your brain detects the seam it orients to it every single time. You will not un-notice it. This is the most common reason people abandon a machine they otherwise liked.

Adequate maximum volume. You need to sit above the snore. A machine that tops out below a loud snore is useless for the one job you bought it for.

No auto-off. Many default to a timer. You want continuous operation all night, and it is worth checking that the machine remembers this rather than resetting.

Mechanical versus digital

Mechanical machines contain an actual fan and an acoustic housing. The sound is genuinely non-repeating because it is being generated in real time rather than played back, and it has natural low-frequency content. The classic design in this category — a fan in a vented drum with an adjustable collar — has been made largely unchanged for decades because it works.

Downsides: one sound only, adjustable in tone but not in kind. Moving parts eventually wear. Not small.

Digital machines offer many sounds, including brown and pink noise, plus rain, surf and so on. Better ones use long or algorithmically generated samples with no audible loop; worse ones are transparently repetitive. The specification will rarely tell you which you are buying, so return policies matter.

Choose digital if you want brown noise specifically, since most mechanical units produce something closer to pink. Choose mechanical if loop artefacts bother you and you are happy with one sound forever.

What to skip

Phone-sized travel units. Physically incapable of the low end. Fine for a hotel corridor, useless against a snore in the same bed. If you travel, there are better approaches.

Machines whose selling point is the app. You want it to make a sound continuously, all night, for years. Every additional dependency is a way for that to fail.

Anything with a light you cannot turn off. Surprisingly common, genuinely disruptive.

Nature soundscapes with events in them. Birdsong, thunder, gulls. Anything with distinct events is the opposite of a masking sound — you are adding more things to orient to.

The cheap test first

Before spending anything: play brown noise from a phone or run a fan for three nights and see whether masking helps you at all.

It costs nothing and it answers the only question that matters. Some people find masking transformative; others find any added sound worse than the snore. Find out which you are before buying hardware.

If a fan works, a fan is a legitimate permanent answer. It is the original sound machine and nobody needs to upgrade from something that is already working.

Placement

Between you and the snoring, rather than on the far side of the bed or across the room. You are trying to raise the noise floor at your ears specifically.

Off the floor, on a bedside surface, roughly at head height. Not pointed directly at your face — you want the room filled, not a beam.

What no machine fixes

Masking manages the symptom. If the snoring includes pauses, gasping or choking, covering it up removes the only warning system in the house, and you are the only one who can hear it. What to listen for.

And the arithmetic is worth stating plainly: treating the snoring at source gives back more sleep than any machine can.
