The Best Earplugs for Sleeping Next to a Snorer
Snoring sits in the low frequencies, which is exactly where earplugs perform worst. That single fact explains why most of them disappoint, and it tells you what to buy instead.
Almost everything written about snoring is addressed to the snorer. This one is for the person lying awake at 2am doing arithmetic about how many hours are left.
Before the recommendations, the physics, because it explains why your last three pairs of earplugs did not work.
Why earplugs underperform against snoring specifically
Snoring is a low-frequency sound. The bulk of its energy sits somewhere between 100 and 500 Hz, and the deep, resonant snores — the ones that travel through walls — sit at the bottom of that range.
Low frequencies are the hardest thing for any passive earplug to stop. Long wavelengths pass through and around small barriers, and they conduct through bone as well as air, which means that even a perfectly sealed ear canal does not fully isolate you from a noise generated a foot away in the same bed.
This is also why the NRR figure on the packet misleads you. Noise Reduction Rating is a single number averaged across the frequency spectrum, and it is weighted toward the mid and high frequencies where plugs perform well. A 33 NRR foam plug that nearly eliminates an alarm clock might take only a fraction of that off a low snore.
The practical consequence: expect earplugs to reduce snoring to a tolerable murmur rather than silence. Anyone promising silence is selling something.

Foam — best raw attenuation, worst comfort for side sleepers
Slow-recovery polyurethane foam, rolled and inserted, expanding to fill the canal. This is still the highest-attenuation option available over the counter, and against snoring it is the most effective thing most people will try.
The problem is mechanical rather than acoustic. Foam plugs protrude, and a protruding plug pressed into a pillow all night produces ear canal soreness that a lot of people cannot tolerate past a few nights. Ear infections and irritation are a genuine risk with nightly use of anything disposable that you insert repeatedly.
Mack's and Howard Leight make the widely available options. Buy the smaller-diameter versions if you have narrow canals, which is the single most common reason foam plugs fail to seal.
Silicone putty — best for side sleepers
These are not inserted. You warm a ball of mouldable silicone in your fingers and cap the entrance to the ear canal with it, forming a flat seal that sits flush with the outer ear.
That flatness is the entire advantage. There is nothing to press against the pillow, so side sleepers get through the night without soreness, and this is the option that partners of snorers most often settle on long term.
Attenuation is lower than foam in the mid and high frequencies, but the gap narrows in the low frequencies that matter here. Mack's Pillow Soft and Ohropax are the common ones. They collect hair and are reusable for only a few nights each.
Flanged reusable plugs — most convenient, least effective here
Silicone or thermoplastic with two or three flanges, washable, lasting months. Comfortable for many people, and the ones marketed for sleep (Loop's sleep-oriented models among them) are designed with a lower profile than concert plugs.
Honest assessment: their attenuation against low-frequency snoring is the weakest of the three categories. If your partner's snoring is moderate, these are pleasant and sufficient. If it is the wall-shaking kind, they will not be enough on their own.
Custom-moulded — best comfort, highest cost
An audiologist takes an impression and produces a plug fitted to your ear. Comfortable indefinitely, lasts years, and seals reliably because it matches your anatomy. Expect a significant cost, and note that comfort rather than raw attenuation is what you are buying.
Worth it if you have established that earplugs work for you and the problem is a long-term one.
What works better than earplugs alone
Masking, not blocking. This is the most underrated advice on the page. A white or pink noise source raises the noise floor so the snore stops standing out against silence, and the brain stops orienting to it. Against low-frequency noise, masking often outperforms attenuation.
Combining the two — silicone putty plus a fan or a white noise machine — works better than either alone and is what most long-term partners of snorers end up doing. Brown noise, which has more low-frequency energy, masks snoring better than white noise does for most people.
Get to sleep first. Trite but real. The snore that wakes you is far more disruptive than the snore you fell asleep through, so going to bed twenty minutes earlier than the snorer has an outsized effect.
Bedroom acoustics. Soft furnishings, a rug, curtains. Bare rooms are reverberant and make everything worse.
The part nobody wants to hear
Earplugs manage a symptom. They do not touch the cause, and there is one scenario where managing the symptom is actively the wrong move.
If the snoring you are sleeping through includes pauses in breathing, gasping, or choking sounds, you are the only person who can observe that — the snorer cannot. Blocking it out means the household loses its only monitoring system for something that needs medical attention.
