Nasal Irrigation for Snoring: Does Rinsing Your Nose Help?

Saline rinsing has better evidence behind it than most things sold for snoring, but the evidence is for nasal symptoms rather than for snoring itself. That distinction decides whether it will work for you.

Saline nasal irrigation is unusual in this category: it is cheap, it has real clinical evidence behind it, and it has essentially no downside. It is also frequently oversold, because the evidence is not about snoring.

What the evidence actually covers

Tier 1 for nasal symptoms. A Cochrane review of saline irrigation in allergic rhinitis concluded it likely improves symptoms with no serious adverse effects reported, though the authors noted the trials were small and generally low quality (Head et al., Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2018). Saline irrigation is also standard adjunctive care in chronic rhinosinusitis.

Tier 2 for snoring, at best. There is no good trial showing that rinsing your nose reduces snoring. The case for it is mechanistic and conditional: nasal congestion causes mouth breathing, mouth breathing causes snoring, and irrigation reduces congestion. That chain is reasonable, and it only applies if congestion is genuinely your problem.

Who it is worth trying for

  • Allergic rhinitis, particularly if your snoring worsens in a season or in a specific bedroom. Allergies and snoring

The safety rule that actually matters

Never use untreated tap water.

This is the one genuinely serious point on the page. Rare but fatal infections have been linked to nasal irrigation with contaminated tap water, because organisms that are harmless to swallow are not harmless introduced into the nasal cavity. Stomach acid deals with what the nose does not.

Use one of:

  • Distilled or sterile water, bought as such
  • Previously boiled water, boiled for the time your local guidance specifies and then cooled
  • Filtered water through a filter rated to remove organisms of about one micron

This is not a fussy precaution. It is the only rule here worth being rigid about.

Also: rinse the device after every use and let it dry fully. A damp neti pot in a bathroom cupboard grows things.

How to do it

Solution. Isotonic saline is the default and is best tolerated. Pre-mixed sachets are cheap, consistent and remove the guesswork; making your own from non-iodised salt and baking soda works but gets the concentration wrong more often than people think. Hypertonic (saltier) solutions may decongest more but sting and are less well tolerated for daily use.

Volume matters more than device. Higher-volume irrigation — a squeeze bottle or neti pot moving a couple of hundred millilitres — reaches more of the nasal cavity than a low-volume spray. Sprays are for moisturising; irrigation is for washing.

Technique. Lean forward over a sink, head tilted, mouth open, breathing through your mouth throughout. Solution goes into the upper nostril and drains out the lower one. If it runs down your throat, your head angle is wrong.

Warm it slightly. Body-temperature solution is far more comfortable than cold and reduces the sting.

Timing. Once daily is typical. For snoring specifically, evening — an hour or two before bed — makes more sense than morning, so the effect is present when you need it. Some people find rinsing immediately before lying down leaves residual solution that drains annoyingly.

What to expect

If congestion is your problem, improvement in nasal symptoms is usually noticeable within a few days to a couple of weeks. Effects on snoring, if any, follow from that.

Mild stinging early on, especially with hypertonic solution or the wrong temperature.

A small amount of drainage afterwards, which is why doing it right before bed can be irritating.

No effect at all if your snoring is palatal or tongue-base. This is the most common outcome for people who buy it as a snoring remedy without checking where their snoring comes from, which is the reason the check comes first on this site.

Where it sits against other nasal measures

Treating the inflammation — a steroid nasal spray for allergic rhinitis, under medical advice — has stronger evidence than irrigation, and the two are often used together. Irrigation before spraying is the usual order.

Nasal strips address a different thing entirely: mechanical narrowing at the nasal valve rather than swelling inside. Decongestant sprays work faster and cause rebound congestion beyond about three consecutive nights. Irrigation is the thing you use instead, indefinitely, without that problem.

The line

Saline irrigation is safe, cheap and well evidenced for nasal symptoms. It is not a treatment for obstructive sleep apnea and no amount of nasal improvement makes it one.

Common questions
