Do Nasal Strips Increase Your Oxygen Levels?

Easier breathing is not more oxygen. In a healthy person at rest your blood is already carrying almost all it can, and a wider nostril does not change that.

A common claim, and one that confuses two different things: how easily air moves, and how much oxygen ends up in your blood.

Why your oxygen is already near maximum

In a healthy person at rest, arterial blood oxygen saturation runs around 95 to 100%. Haemoglobin is nearly fully loaded.

This is the part people miss. Breathing more, or more easily, cannot push saturation meaningfully above what is already close to full. There is very little headroom. The relationship between how much air you move and how much oxygen your blood carries is not linear — it flattens off hard at the top, and at rest you are already on the flat part.

So a nasal strip that genuinely makes breathing easier does not raise saturation in someone whose saturation was already 97%. There is nowhere for it to go.

What a strip does change

Airflow resistance, which is real and measurable. A wider nasal valve means less work to move the same air.

The subjective sensation of breathing, which is what people actually notice and value.

The route. Easier nasal breathing means less mouth breathing, which has genuine downstream effects — a less dry mouth, air that is filtered and humidified before reaching the lungs, and a more stable airway configuration.

Those are worthwhile. None of them is "more oxygen."

Where oxygen genuinely does drop

Worth knowing, because it is the scenario that matters.

In obstructive sleep apnea, the airway closes repeatedly and gas exchange stops during each event. Saturation falls, sometimes substantially, then recovers when the airway reopens. That cycle — intermittent hypoxia — is the mechanism behind most of apnea's cardiovascular consequences.

That is a real oxygen problem. A nasal strip does not fix it, because the closure is in the pharynx, well beyond where a strip reaches. Why.

The athletic version of the claim

Nasal strips are marketed for sport on an implied oxygen argument.

The physiology is the same: healthy athletes are not oxygen-limited at the lung in normal conditions. Studies of external nasal dilators in exercise have generally found improvements in perceived exertion and nasal airflow, without consistent effects on measured performance or oxygen uptake.

Feeling like breathing is easier is not nothing — perceived effort matters for how hard people train. It is just a different claim from the one on the packaging.

What about pulse oximeter readings?

If you own a finger oximeter or a wearable, you can test this yourself, and most people are surprised.

Sit still, take a baseline reading over several minutes, apply a strip, and read again. In a healthy person at rest the number will not change in any meaningful way. If it appears to, you are almost certainly seeing normal measurement variation, motion artefact, or differences in finger perfusion.

A caveat worth stating: consumer oximeters and wearables are not accurate enough for clinical decisions, and neither a reassuring reading nor a worrying one should substitute for a proper assessment. What wearables can and cannot detect.

The honest summary

Nasal strips make breathing through your nose easier. That is the claim the mechanism supports, it is the reason to buy one, and it is enough on its own.

Anything about oxygen levels, blood oxygenation or oxygen uptake is marketing that outran the physiology. More claims that did the same.
