Can Your Smartwatch Detect Snoring? Apple, Samsung, Oura and Fitbit Compared

Three consumer devices are FDA-cleared to flag sleep apnea, and only one of them actually records your snoring. Those are different features, and the difference matters.

Two features get conflated constantly here, and separating them answers most of the question.

Snoring detection means a microphone listening for the sound and reporting how much you made. Sleep apnea screening means inferring disordered breathing from physiological signals — usually blood oxygen and movement — and flagging that you might have a medical condition.

A device can do either, both, or neither. The one you want depends on whether you are curious about the noise or worried about your breathing.

Sleep apnea screening: three cleared devices

As things stand, three consumer products carry FDA clearance for detecting signs of sleep apnea: the Apple Watch (Series 9 and later, including Ultra 2), the Samsung Galaxy Watch (Watch 7, Watch 8 and Ultra models), and the Withings Sleep Analyzer, an under-mattress pad rather than a wearable.

Samsung was first to market with a De Novo authorisation. Its feature assesses for signs of moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in users aged 22 and over, and requires two nights of at least four hours' sleep within a ten-day window before it will report.

Apple's implementation looks for "breathing disturbances" over a month and notifies you if the pattern is consistent with moderate-to-severe apnea.

The accuracy number is the important part. In the validation work supporting clearance, Apple tested the feature against in-lab polysomnography in around 1,400 people, and it correctly flagged people who had apnea roughly 66% of the time.

Read that carefully. It means about a third of people with moderate-to-severe apnea wearing the watch would not be alerted. A notification is meaningful information; the absence of one is close to meaningless. You cannot rule out sleep apnea by not receiving a notification, and this is the single most misunderstood thing about the entire category.

Actual snoring detection

Here the field narrows sharply.

Samsung genuinely records snoring. Using the phone's microphone — the phone, placed nearby, rather than the watch — Samsung Health captures snoring audio and reports duration alongside your sleep stages. Of the mainstream ecosystems, this is the one that does the thing people actually mean when they ask.

Apple does not report snoring as such. The sleep apnea feature works from the accelerometer detecting breathing disturbances, not from listening. Your iPhone will not tell you how much you snored.

Oura and other smart rings have no FDA clearance for apnea detection and no microphone, so no snoring detection. They report blood oxygen, heart rate and movement, and a ring cannot hear anything by construction.

Fitbit has no dedicated apnea feature. It tracks estimated oxygen variation overnight, which is loosely informative and explicitly not a screening tool.

What a dedicated app does better

For the specific question "how much and how loudly do I snore," a phone app beats every wearable, because the limiting factor is the microphone and your phone has a much better one than your watch.

Apps in this category record through the night, log volume over time, and save clips of the loudest episodes. That last feature is the genuinely useful one: a recording of the actual sound tells you more than any score. You can hear whether the noise is a steady nasal snuffle or a violent palatal flutter, and — critically — whether there are silences followed by a gasp.

So what should you actually use

If you want to know whether you snore and what it sounds like: a free phone app, for a week. Nothing else needed.

If someone has raised a concern about your breathing: the recording is still the first step, and then a doctor. A wearable notification is a useful prompt but a poor filter, given that a third of cases go unflagged.

If you already own a cleared device: turn the feature on. It costs nothing and an alert is worth having. Just do not treat silence as reassurance.

If you are buying hardware to answer this question: do not. Record a week on the phone you already own, work out what kind of snorer you are, and spend the money on whatever that points at instead.

The limitation shared by all of them

None of these devices diagnoses anything. Every manufacturer says so, and they are right to.

Sleep apnea is diagnosed by polysomnography in a lab or by a validated home sleep apnea test, both interpreted by a clinician. A consumer wearable is a screening prompt at best — useful for getting someone into a clinic who would otherwise never have gone, and unable to tell you that you are fine.

If you have witnessed breathing pauses, gasping awake, morning headaches or heavy daytime sleepiness, those symptoms outrank any wearable's opinion in both directions. What to do about it.
