Do Noise-Cancelling Headphones Work Against Snoring?
Active noise cancellation is strongest exactly where earplugs are weakest. That makes it genuinely promising for snoring, and it explains precisely which snores it fails on.
There is a neat inversion at the centre of this question, and it is the reason the usual advice is confused.
Passive earplugs are worst at low frequencies. Active noise cancellation is best at low frequencies. They fail in opposite directions, which means the right answer depends entirely on what your partner's snore actually sounds like.
How ANC works, briefly
A microphone on the outside of the headphone samples incoming sound. The electronics generate an inverted waveform and play it into your ear, so the two cancel.
For this to work, the system has to predict the incoming wave accurately enough to invert it in time. That is straightforward for steady, predictable, low-frequency sound — long wavelengths give the processor time to work with, and a continuous drone is highly predictable. It is much harder for sudden, irregular, high-frequency sound, where the waveform changes faster than the system can track.
Hence ANC's reputation for annihilating aircraft cabin rumble while doing very little about a nearby conversation.
What that means for snoring
Snoring is a mixed signal, and ANC splits it.
The rumble gets cancelled well. The deep, resonant, low-frequency component — the part that travels through walls and that earplugs cannot touch — is exactly what ANC is built for. Good implementations reduce it substantially, and people do report being able to fall asleep beside a heavy snorer wearing them.
The harmonics get through. Snoring is not a pure low tone. It carries harmonics extending well above the fundamental, and effective cancellation up at 1 to 2 kHz is beyond what current consumer ANC reliably achieves. The snorted, rasping, higher-pitched elements slip past.
The irregularity is a problem. Snoring is not a steady drone. It starts, stops, changes character, and includes sudden events. ANC adapts less well to that than to constant noise, so the transitions are what you tend to notice.
The practical upshot: ANC turns a loud snore into a muffled one. It does not deliver silence, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling headphones.
So which should you use
This is genuinely answerable, and it depends on the snore.
Deep, rumbling, wall-shaking snore — ANC has the advantage. This is the component earplugs are worst against and ANC is best against.
Snorted, rasping, higher-pitched snore — passive earplugs win. The energy is higher up, where foam performs well and ANC does not.
Both, which is most people — combine. ANC headphones playing brown noise is the strongest configuration available, because cancellation takes out the rumble, the masking covers the harmonics, and the two cover each other's gaps. Why brown noise specifically.
The practical problem
Everything above is acoustics. The reason most people do not end up using over-ear ANC headphones in bed is physical.
They are bulky. If you sleep on your side, an over-ear cup pressed into a pillow becomes painful within an hour, and the ear inside it gets hot. Battery life needs to cover the whole night, and many models do not. Some produce a faint hiss or a sensation of pressure that a few people find genuinely unpleasant.
Regular ANC earbuds are less bulky but still protrude enough to be uncomfortable side-sleeping, and they fall out.
This is why the sleep-specific form factors exist — flatter, softer, designed to be lain on. Most of them prioritise comfort and masking over cancellation, and that trade-off is worth understanding before you buy.

Worth trying tonight if you already own ANC headphones. You will learn within one night whether cancellation helps with your particular partner's snore, and that answer transfers to any purchase you make afterwards.
Sleep on your back for the test if you can, so comfort does not confound the acoustics.
The thing to check first
If the snoring you are cancelling includes pauses, gasps or choking sounds, cancelling it removes the household's only monitoring system for something that needs medical attention. You are the only person who can hear it.
