Sleeping on a Plane Next to a Snorer

You cannot move them, you cannot ask them to change position, and you have a fixed number of hours. Everything useful here is about your own kit and your own head, decided before you board.

This is the hardest version of the problem, because every lever you would normally use is gone.

You cannot move to another room. You cannot nudge them — they are a stranger. You cannot ask them to sleep on their side in a seat that does not permit it. And unlike a bad night at home, there is no possibility of catching up tomorrow if you land into a meeting.

So everything here is either preparation or your own equipment. There is no negotiation available.

Why snoring is worse at altitude

Worth knowing, because it explains why people who do not snore at home snore on planes, and why it is often louder than you would expect.

Cabin air is extremely dry — commonly below 20% relative humidity, far drier than any bedroom. Dry mucous membranes swell and congest, and a dry throat vibrates more noisily.

Cabin pressure is reduced, equivalent to roughly 6,000–8,000 feet on most aircraft. Lower oxygen partial pressure alters breathing patterns during sleep, and mild sleep-disordered breathing is measurably more common at altitude than at sea level.

The seated position is bad for airways. Head forward and chin toward the chest narrows the pharynx. This is the single biggest factor, and it is the one that makes upright sleeping so reliably noisy.

Alcohol is unusually available and unusually effective. A drink before a long-haul flight relaxes the airway dilator muscles for hours, and the dehydrating effect compounds the dry-air problem.

None of which helps you at 3am over the Atlantic, but it does explain why the person beside you may be genuinely bewildered to hear they were snoring.

Hearing protection: the only thing that reliably works

Everything else is marginal. This is not.

Foam earplugs, properly inserted. The best noise reduction per gram you can carry, and the most commonly used wrong. Roll them thin, pull the ear up and back, insert deep, hold while they expand. An earplug sitting in the outer ear does very little. Carry several pairs — they get dropped, and a dropped earplug on a plane floor is finished.

Noise-cancelling headphones handle the wrong frequencies alone. Active cancellation is excellent at the low continuous drone of engines and poor at the irregular mid-frequency content of snoring. On their own they will remove the aircraft and leave you the snore, which can be worse.

The combination is the answer. Foam earplugs underneath, noise-cancelling headphones over the top, and brown noise playing at low volume. The plugs and the cancellation between them take out most of the broadband noise, and the brown noise masks the peaks that get through. This works considerably better than any single component. Brown noise over white on a plane specifically. Its energy is weighted low, which sits closer to the frequency profile of snoring, and it is less fatiguing over many hours than white noise.

Seat choice, decided before you board

The only preventive lever you have, and it is only available at booking.

Window. A wall on one side is one fewer neighbour, and you can lean against something, which solves the head-slumping problem that makes upright sleep both uncomfortable and — for you — a snoring risk of your own.

Avoid the middle on any flight you intend to sleep on. Two neighbours doubles the odds.

Bulkhead trade-off. More legroom, but bassinet positions mean infants, and armrests often do not raise.

Behind the wing is not quieter than in front of it on most modern aircraft. Ignore that folklore.

Once boarded, a polite request to a cabin crew member for a different seat is occasionally granted on a lightly loaded flight. It is worth asking early and it is worth asking once.

Your own position

Support your head laterally. A wrap-around or collar-style travel pillow that stops your head falling sideways and forward does two things: it makes sleep more likely, and it keeps your own airway more open. The classic horseshoe pillow does the second job badly.

Recline, if the seat allows and the person behind is not eating. Even a small recline opens the chin-to-chest angle.

Do not sleep with your chin down. It is the worst airway position available, and it is where an unsupported head ends up by default.

What actually helps you fall asleep

Skip the alcohol. It is the most commonly reached-for tool and it makes everything worse — fragmented second-half sleep, dehydration on top of dry cabin air, and a real chance you become the snorer. Alcohol and snoring.

Eye mask. Cabin lighting is unpredictable and screens are on all around you. A proper contoured mask is worth the space.

Hydrate deliberately. Dry cabin air will dry your own nose and throat over a long flight, and a congested nose is both uncomfortable and a route to your own mouth breathing.

Consider a nasal strip for yourself. Genuinely useful in dry cabin air if your nose tends to congest, and they take no space. Nasal strips for travel.

Mouth tape on a plane is a judgement call. The usual rules apply and two of them bite harder here: no alcohol, and only if your nose is clear — which in a dry cabin it may not be. The part that is in your head

Some of the difficulty here is not acoustic. Lying there tracking every breath, waiting for the next snore, produces an arousal state that keeps you awake more effectively than the noise does.

The reframe that helps: you are not going to sleep well on this flight either way. Aiming for rest rather than sleep — eyes closed, masked, breathing slowly, accepting fragmented dozing — usually produces more actual sleep than trying hard to sleep does.
