Does the Apple Watch Detect Snoring?

That is the short answer, and it disappoints people who assumed a watch tracking their sleep must also be listening to it. The longer answer is more interesting, because the watch does track something adjacent that is arguably more useful than a snore log.
Why it cannot hear you
The Apple Watch has a microphone, but it is not used for sleep monitoring, and there is no setting that turns it into an overnight sound recorder. Apple's sleep features are built on motion and heart-rate sensors, not audio.
This is a deliberate design choice rather than an oversight. Continuous overnight audio recording is expensive in battery terms and awkward in privacy terms, and a wrist is a poor microphone position compared with a phone on the nightstand.

What it does track instead
Recent Apple Watch models track a metric Apple calls breathing disturbances, and use it to power a sleep apnea notification feature that received FDA clearance in 2024. The mechanism matters for understanding what the result means. Rather than listening, the watch uses its accelerometer to detect small movements at the wrist associated with interruptions in normal breathing. It accumulates these over a long window — Apple describes analysing data across 30-day periods — and notifies you if the pattern is consistent with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea.
Three consequences follow, and each one gets misunderstood:
It is not measuring snoring. Breathing disturbances and snoring are related but different. You can snore loudly with no breathing disturbances, and you can have breathing disturbances without much noise. A quiet night is not a reassuring reading and a loud one is not an alarming one.
It is not immediate. Because it analyses long windows, you will not get a nightly snoring score. This frustrates people who want a number each morning, and it is the correct design — a single night tells you very little.
It is not a diagnosis. A notification is a prompt to get assessed. No consumer wearable diagnoses obstructive sleep apnea, and Apple does not claim otherwise.
What a notification means, and what to do with it
If your watch flags possible sleep apnea, that is genuinely worth acting on — not because the watch is definitive, but because the pre-test probability just went up in someone who was not otherwise being assessed.
The useful next steps:
- Do not buy a snoring product in response. This is the most common wrong move. Nothing sold over the counter treats obstructive sleep apnea, and quietening a symptom you have not had assessed is how a diagnosis gets delayed by years.

Equally: no notification is not a clean bill of health. The feature is designed to catch moderate-to-severe patterns, so mild apnea can pass unflagged, and an unsupported model or an unworn watch flags nothing at all. If you actually want snore audio
Use your phone. The microphone is better placed, the battery is on a charger, and the storage is larger.

Other wearables

The evidence tier
Tier 2 for screening use, plausible and low risk. Apple's sleep apnea notification has regulatory clearance and a published validation behind it, which puts it well above most consumer sleep claims. But clearance means it performed acceptably against a reference standard in a study population, not that it is accurate in you.
