Why Their Snoring Wakes You and Not Them

It is one of the more infuriating asymmetries in any household. There are three separate mechanisms behind it, and understanding them changes how you approach the problem.

Lying awake beside someone producing 60 decibels of noise while they sleep peacefully through it is a specific kind of injustice, and the usual explanation — they are a heavier sleeper — is only a small part of it.

There are three separate mechanisms, and they compound.

1. Your brain filters sounds it predicted

The auditory system does not process all sound equally. It continually models what is coming next and dedicates attention to what does not match. Predictable, self-generated sound gets heavily suppressed before it ever reaches conscious awareness.

Snoring is about as self-generated and predictable as a sound can be. It is produced by the sleeper's own body, in perfect time with their own breathing, and it therefore arrives entirely pre-empted.

It is the same reason you do not hear your own footsteps or heartbeat unless you go looking for them, and it applies whether or not somebody is asleep. To them the sound is neurologically invisible in a way that is not laziness or a character flaw.

For you it is external, unpredictable in its timing and intensity, and produced by another person. That is precisely the category of sound the brain is built to attend to.

2. Arousal thresholds genuinely differ

The amount of stimulus required to shift someone from sleep toward wakefulness varies enormously between people, and it varies within a person across the night.

Some of this is constitutional. Some is state-dependent — you are much easier to rouse from light sleep than from deep slow-wave sleep, so timing determines whether the same snore wakes you.

The unfortunate feedback loop is that fragmented sleep lowers your arousal threshold over time. The more your sleep has been broken by the noise, the more lightly you sleep, and the more readily the next snore wakes you. Partners frequently describe becoming more sensitive to it over months and years rather than habituating. That is a real effect, not imagination.

3. Snorers are often being aroused, and do not know it

This is the part that changes the conversation.

Snoring exists on a continuum with sleep-disordered breathing. Someone who snores heavily may be experiencing repeated micro-arousals — brief shifts toward lighter sleep triggered by their own airway resistance — that never reach conscious awareness and are entirely forgotten by morning.

So the premise can be wrong. They may not be sleeping soundly through it at all. They may be having their sleep fragmented too, and simply have no access to that information.

This is why the "you sleep fine, I am the one suffering" framing sometimes misfires. A person who snores heavily and wakes unrefreshed, needs an alarm to be prised out of bed, and is sleepy in the afternoon is describing fragmented sleep. They just attribute it to being busy.

Why this is useful to know

It removes the moral dimension. They are not sleeping through it out of indifference. They are neurologically incapable of hearing it. Arguments in which one person is implicitly accused of not caring enough to wake up are unwinnable and unhelpful.

It gives you a better opening. Rather than "your snoring keeps me awake," which invites defensiveness, there is: "heavy snoring can fragment the snorer's sleep too, without them knowing. Are you actually waking up rested?" That question is often the one that gets someone to a doctor, because it is about them rather than about your grievance.

It explains why you cannot simply get used to it. Habituation works for constant, predictable sound — traffic, a fan, a fridge. Snoring is irregular in timing, volume and character, which is exactly the profile the brain refuses to filter out. The practical implication

You cannot fix this by becoming a better sleeper, and it is worth letting go of the idea that you should be able to. Your auditory system is functioning exactly as designed.

What you can do is change the signal — masking and blocking — or change the source, which is the only route that actually resolves it.
