Snoring Apps: Which Are Worth Using
A free phone app beats a several-hundred-pound wearable at the one job you actually need doing. What matters is which output you look at.
For the specific question "how much and how loudly do I snore," a free phone app outperforms every wearable on the market. The limiting factor is microphone quality, and your phone has a far better one than your watch.
The feature that actually matters
Not the score. Saved audio clips of the loudest episodes.
A nightly snoring percentage tells you very little. A thirty-second recording tells you what kind of snorer you are — whether the noise is a soft nasal snuffle, a deep palatal flutter or a strangled tongue-base rasp. If an app does not save clips, it is not doing the job.
What else is worth having
A nightly time series, so you can see when the snoring started and whether it came in waves or ran continuously. Snoring that begins two hours in behaves differently from snoring that starts immediately.
Note-taking for confounders. Alcohol, congestion, position, how tired you were. Without these you cannot interpret the outliers, and a doctor will ask. Some apps have this built in; a note on your phone works just as well.
Export. If you are taking this to an appointment, you want to be able to send a clip rather than hand over your unlocked phone.
Local storage. Which brings us to the thing worth checking.
The privacy point
You are running a microphone in your bedroom all night. That is worth ten seconds of thought.
Check whether recordings are stored on the device or uploaded, what the retention policy is, and whether audio is used for anything beyond showing it back to you. Free apps monetise somehow, and the honest ones say how.
If someone else shares the room, tell them. Recording a sleeping person without their knowledge is a bad idea practically as well as ethically — an ambush recording gets argued with rather than acted on. How to handle that
The well-known options

The honest advice is to use whichever runs reliably on your phone and saves clips. There is no meaningful accuracy competition here — a phone microphone next to your bed either captures the noise or it does not.

Phone on a bedside surface a few feet from your head, plugged in, screen down. Not under a pillow.

What apps cannot do
They do not diagnose sleep apnea. Nothing consumer does. A sleep study interpreted by a clinician is the only route, and a reassuring app score is not reassurance. What testing involves
They do not measure oxygen. The thing that actually matters in apnea is what your saturation does, and a microphone cannot see it.
Their "sleep stage" estimates are approximate at best, inferred from movement and sound rather than measured.
The one thing to do with the recording
Listen to it. Not the score — the audio.
