Soundproofing a Bedroom Against Snoring: What Is Worth Doing

If you have moved to another room and can still hear it, the problem is almost certainly the door. Most of what gets sold as soundproofing does nothing for low-frequency noise.

This is for the specific and demoralising situation where you have relocated to another room and can still hear it through the wall.

The good news is that the fix is usually cheap and specific. The bad news is that almost everything marketed as soundproofing will not help you.

Why foam panels do nothing

The acoustic foam sold in tiles online is absorption, not isolation. It reduces reverberation within a room — useful for recording vocals, useless for stopping sound passing through a wall.

Worse, absorption products work on mid and high frequencies. Snoring is low-frequency, roughly 100 to 500 Hz, and stopping low frequencies requires mass, not foam. A thin panel of anything is transparent to a long wavelength.

The same applies to most "soundproof" curtains, which are heavy curtains. They will slightly reduce reflections and do essentially nothing about transmission through a wall.

The door is the problem

In almost every domestic case, sound is not coming through the wall. It is coming through the gaps around the door.

Interior doors are typically hollow-core, which is to say a thin skin over a cardboard honeycomb, and they are hung with a gap at the bottom and clearance around the frame. Acoustically that is close to leaving a window open. A one percent gap in a barrier can undo the great majority of its performance.

Fix in this order, cheapest first:

1. Seal the bottom gap. A door sweep or draught excluder. This is usually the single largest leak and the cheapest thing on the list. If you do only one thing, do this.

2. Seal the perimeter. Adhesive foam or rubber weatherstripping around the frame so the door closes against a seal rather than into a gap.

3. Replace a hollow door with a solid one. More expensive and genuinely effective, but only worth doing after the gaps are sealed — a solid door with an unsealed gap underneath performs little better than a hollow one.

Doing these three things properly will outperform any amount of foam on the walls, usually for under $50.

Other leaks worth checking

Shared ventilation. Air bricks, extractor ducts and old chimney breasts connecting rooms carry sound efficiently. Sometimes the culprit when the door is already sealed.

Gaps around pipework and cables passing through walls. Acoustic sealant.

Adjoining wardrobes or built-in cupboards backing onto the other room, which often have a much thinner partition behind them than the wall does.

The floor, if you are below them. Airborne sound through a ceiling is harder to address and rugs help less than people hope, because again the problem is low frequencies.

If you are in the same room

Different problem entirely. You cannot isolate yourself from a sound source in the same bed, and nothing on this page applies.

What does help is geometry: a larger bed, distance, sleeping head-to-toe, and moving the bed off a hard reflective wall so you are not receiving the reflection as well as the direct sound. Soft furnishings genuinely help within a room — a rug, curtains, upholstered furniture reduce reverberation and take the edge off the sound's harshness, even though they do nothing for transmission.

Beyond that, masking and earplugs are the tools.

The honest cost comparison

Before spending on building work, consider the ranking by cost and effect:

  • Door sweep and weatherstripping: cheap, and usually the whole answer between rooms
  • Brown noise machine: cheap, works in the same room
  • Earplugs: very cheap
  • Solid door: moderate, effective, only after sealing
  • Actual wall treatment: expensive, disruptive, rarely necessary for snoring

Proper acoustic isolation of a wall means adding mass and decoupling layers — resilient channels, additional plasterboard, isolation clips. This is real construction work at real expense, and for a domestic snoring problem it is almost never the right answer. If you are considering it, the money is better spent on getting the snoring assessed and treated.

The obvious point

Sealing a door is a sensible thing to do if you have arrived at separate rooms deliberately and want to sleep well there. Doing that well.

It is a strange thing to do if the underlying snoring has never been looked at. Building acoustic infrastructure around an unexamined medical symptom is a large investment in not finding out.
