Renter-Friendly Soundproofing Against a Snorer
Everything that genuinely blocks snoring involves mass, and most of it involves screws. Here is what a tenant can do without touching the structure, ranked by how much difference it makes.
The physics of this problem is unkind to tenants. Blocking low-frequency sound requires mass and sealed gaps, and the effective interventions — a solid-core door, a second layer of plasterboard, an acoustic seal kit — all involve screws, adhesive or paint.
What follows is what works without any of that, in order of how much difference it makes. The honest headline: the best renter-friendly options are not wall treatments at all.
First, the thing nobody wants to hear about foam
Do not buy acoustic foam panels or egg-crate foam. They are the most-purchased and least-useful product in this category, and they are especially wasted here.
Foam absorbs mid and high frequencies — it reduces echo within a room. Snoring is low-frequency, roughly 100 to 500 Hz, and stopping low frequencies needs mass rather than absorption. The same applies to "soundproof" curtains. They are heavy curtains. Over a window they slightly reduce reflections inside the room; against sound coming through a wall or door they do close to nothing.
The gap under the door is the whole game
If the snorer is in another room, most of what you hear is not coming through the wall. It is coming through the air gap around the door — and air gaps are the one thing a tenant can fix completely, reversibly, and cheaply.
A door sweep, in the removable kind. The screw-in type is better and is not available to you. Adhesive-backed sweeps and the slide-on under-door type both work, and the slide-on version leaves no residue at all. This is the single highest-yield purchase on this page.
A draught excluder as the zero-commitment version. The weighted fabric tube you push against the base of a door. Less effective than a fitted sweep because it moves, but it costs almost nothing, leaves no trace, and it is a fair test of whether sealing the gap helps enough to bother with more.
Removable foam weatherstrip tape around the frame. Low-tack versions exist and come off cleanly. The gap along the sides and top of a door is smaller than the one underneath but it is not nothing, and sealing the perimeter is where the remaining leak is once the base is done.
The principle: sound leaks like water. A perfectly treated wall with a one-centimetre gap under the door performs like a room with no treatment at all. Seal the leaks before considering anything else.
Mass you can put in place without fixing it
If sealing the door is not enough, the next lever is mass — and mass can be stood rather than fitted.
A full bookcase against the shared wall. Books are dense, and a loaded bookshelf is one of the few genuinely effective wall treatments a tenant can install by carrying it in. Fill it completely; a half-empty shelf is a rack of air.
A wardrobe or heavy furniture on the shared wall, for the same reason.
Moving blankets on a freestanding frame or a clothes rail. Moving blankets are heavy — that is the point — and hung from a rail rather than nailed to the wall, they add real mass where you need it while remaining entirely removable. This is unlovely and it works, which is the trade-off on this page.
Do not expect transformation. A bookcase reduces transmission; it does not stop it.
What actually solves it for most renters
The reason the wall section is short is that for a tenant the winning strategy is usually not to treat the room at all.
Hearing protection, properly done. Foam earplugs inserted correctly, or earplugs plus a sound machine, outperform every reversible wall treatment for a fraction of the cost and effort. Sound masking. A white or brown noise machine raises the noise floor so the snore stops standing out against silence. If you share the room
None of the above applies. You cannot isolate yourself from a sound source in the same bed, and no wall treatment addresses a snore from thirty centimetres away.

The cost comparison, honestly
A slide-on door sweep and a draught excluder together cost less than $30 and are the two highest-yield items here. Earplugs are a few dollars. A decent sound machine runs $30 to $50, and a phone playing brown noise is free.
Against that, "soundproofing" products marketed for rentals — foam kits, acoustic panels, sound-blocking curtains — commonly run $50 to $200 and, for low-frequency noise through a wall, do not work. That is the one genuine warning on this page.
And the part that is not about noise
Snoring loud enough to be a soundproofing problem is loud enough to be worth assessing. Heavy snoring with witnessed breathing pauses, gasping awake, morning headaches or daytime sleepiness points at obstructive sleep apnea, which no product on this page and no snoring remedy treats.
