Can Snoring Cause Hearing Loss?
Loud snoring can reach noise levels that would require ear protection at work. There is a study on whether that damages the hearing of snorers and the people beside them, and its findings are narrower than the headlines.
The question sounds like a stretch until you look at the numbers. Loud snoring has been measured well above 50 decibels and heavy snoring considerably higher — into a range that, sustained over an eight-hour shift, would trigger hearing protection requirements in a workplace.
A bed partner is exposed to it for eight hours, most nights, for years. So the question is a fair one.
What the research actually found
The study people are referring to when this comes up is a 2003 paper in the Journal of Otolaryngology, which examined hearing in snorers and their bed partners (Sardesai et al.).
Its finding was not that bed partners go deaf. It found evidence of hearing changes in snorers themselves — specifically a pattern in the ear on the side they habitually slept, consistent with the snorer's own exposure to a noise source located, in effect, inside their own head. The bed partner findings were less pronounced.
That is a counterintuitive result and it is worth sitting with. The person most exposed to snoring at close range is the snorer.
How much weight to put on it
Not a great deal, honestly, and it would be overstating things to tell anyone their hearing is at risk.
- It is a single study with a modest sample.
- It has not been widely replicated in the two decades since, which for a finding this striking is telling.
- Separating snoring exposure from age, occupational noise history and the general prevalence of hearing loss in middle age is difficult, and the study could not do it perfectly.

The honest summary for a bed partner: your hearing is probably not the thing to worry about. Your sleep is.
The mechanism, for what it is worth
Noise-induced hearing damage is a function of intensity and duration. Occupational limits are built around eight-hour exposures at 85 dB, with the permissible time halving for every few decibels above that.
Loud snoring can peak in that vicinity. But it is intermittent rather than continuous — snoring comes in bursts with quiet gaps, and peak levels are not sustained levels. Cumulative dose over a night is therefore much lower than a peak reading suggests, which is one reason the effect, if real, is subtle.
Distance matters too, and it matters a lot. Sound intensity falls with the square of distance, so a partner an arm's length away is receiving dramatically less than the snorer's own cochlea is.
What is actually well established
The documented harm to bed partners is not auditory. It is sleep.
Partners of heavy snorers lose measurable sleep, wake more often, and carry the daytime consequences — impaired concentration, low mood, irritability, and the relationship strain that follows from all of it. What to do about the noise
Earplugs, properly inserted. Foam plugs give the best attenuation per cost and most people insert them too shallow to work. Roll thin, pull the ear up and back, insert deep, hold while they expand. Earplug options.

The most effective response to snoring noise is to reduce the snoring, and the first step in that is finding out what is causing it rather than what to buy.
